KORA, Western Africa

Kora, harp lute from Western Africa (Malinké ethnic group), beginning of the XX° century.
Body of an half calabash covered by a cow vellum tight with gut laces, one rectangular soundhole decorated with nails on the rigth of the neck.
Neck, handles (bulkalamo), crosspiece (barambando) and bridge in vene wood (keno).
Twenty gut strings tuned with gut ring adjusters sliding on the neck.
Favorite instrument of the mandingues griots (poets) to accompany their stories.
